Illinois requirements

Are you eligible to vote in the State of Illinois?

Citizenship

All voters must be native or naturalized citizens of the United States.

Residency

All voters must be a resident of Illinois and of their election precinct at least 30 days before the next election and not be claiming the right to vote anywhere else.

Age Eligibility

All voters must be 18 years old on or before the next election.

Criminal record

Voters cannot be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of conviction of any crime.

The deadline to register online to vote is Sunday, October 24, 2022.

The deadline for registering by mail to vote is (postmarked by) Tuesday, October 11th, 2022.

The deadline to register in person to vote is Tuesday, November 7, 2022. After the regular voter registration deadline of Tuesday, November 7th, 2022, you can register and vote in-person during a grace period, which begins the day after the deadline and runs through Election Day. During this grace period, you can register and vote at your local election office, a permanent polling place, at early voting sites, at some polling places on Election Day, and at any other location specifically designated for grace-period voting.

Yes! You have the right to register to vote at your school address – this includes a dorm room. Any student living in a dorm is entitled to the same rights as any other student. If you receive mail in a Post Office box you can sign an affidavit (or, in some cases, get a letter from your college’s Residential Life office) asserting that you live at your dorm address.

Residency must be acquired in the State of Illinois on or before October 10, 2022 (30 days before the next election).
